Abstract:Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a sensitive topic many adults avoid discussing with children. However, picturebooks, if selected carefully and handled responsibly by adult guardians, can provide a suitable medium to talk with children about the issue, yet many texts have significant shortcomings. This article investigates the gender-role allocation of adults in thirty-eight narrative English- and German-language picturebooks addressing CSA in light of reinforcing a gender-biased stereotyping of menacing men and well-meaning women.
