Abstract:This article argues that in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Bertilak and his lady control and limit Gawain’s sleep during the three days leading up to his encounter with the Green Knight. Despite Bertilak’s assurances of rest, sleep deprivation substantially and negatively impacts Gawain’s behavior.
