On taking the affective turn: interview with Lauren Berlant, Ann Cvetkovich, and Deborah Gould
Megan: Elizabeth and I have been working for four years together on questions of emotion, affect, media, and politics. Since 2016, emotion has come to have a new currency in political discussion and we’re curious about how you have reacted to this so-called post-truth phenomenon – the mix of disinformation, crises of trust in institutions, and the overt discussions of emotionality in politics that have been dominating headlines. As someone writing a dissertation on emotion in the 1980s, I can testify to the dearth of scholarship taking a critical approach to emotions and affect at that time. Thankfully, each of your scholarly contributions have opened up trajectories in the study of emotion and affect for generations of scholars. We hope you might each talk about how you came to the study of emotion and affect.
期刊介绍:
Cultural Studies is an international journal which explores the relation between cultural practices, everyday life, material, economic, political, geographical and historical contexts. It fosters more open analytic, critical and political conversations by encouraging people to push the dialogue into fresh, uncharted territory. It also aims to intervene in the processes by which the existing techniques, institutions and structures of power are reproduced, resisted and transformed. Cultural Studies understands the term "culture" inclusively rather than exclusively, and publishes essays which encourage significant intellectual and political experimentation, intervention and dialogue.
