De l’Alcalatén medieval a l’actual; evolució d’un paisatge

A Valencian region located in the mountainous hinterland of Castellon, Alcalaten has undergone a series of general changes over the eight centuries considered in the present study. These changes have resulted in different types of landscapes –from those impacted by animal husbandry in early centuries and by agriculture during the 19th and part of the 20th centuries to the current environmental diversification that has produced three kinds of very different landscapes throughout the region. This article seeks to account for the modes and reasons behind such landscape evolution. To a large extent, this assessment helps not only to understand general aspects of Castellon’s interior regions, but also to foster awareness of their situation in moments like the current one, marked by lingering uncertainty.
