Each institute will serve as a nexus of collaboration to create next-generation theory and applications of AI and to work synergistically with academia and industry. In the fall of 2020, NSF announced 5 new NSF AI institutes and 2 additional institutes funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
