Auricular acupressure for insomnia associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a case report.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. ADHD, as well as medications used to treat it such as stimulants, have been found to increase the risk of sleep disorders including insomnia.1 Currently available pharmacological treatments for insomnia in children have limited efficacy and are associated with adverse effects.2 This has led to a higher demand for nonpharmacological therapies. Auricular acupressure (AA) is considered a safe intervention for the management of several health conditions. Evidence from recent studies indicates that AA can treat insomnia.3 However, to our knowledge, the effects of AA on insomnia associated with ADHD have not been reported. Here, we report a case of a boy with ADHD who presented with insomnia that appeared to be effectively treated with AA.
