This is formed by crosslinking Hb with SOD, CAT, and CA using glutaraldehyde. Crosslinking stroma-free Hb from red blood cell (RBC) reduces CA activity to 55%. Addition of more CA resulted in a preparation with the same CA activity as RBC. PolyHb in the complex acts as a buffer to prevent large pH changes as carbon dioxide is converted to carbonic acid.
