The original outbreak developed in Castiglione di Cervia and Castiglione di Ravenna, two small villages divided by a river. The first case was recorded on August 9th the epidemic outbreak then spread out, thus giving rise to smaller secondary outbreaks and further sporadic cases in the same area, for a total of 337 suspected cases, 217 of which confirmed by blood analysis.
