Along with the p53-mediated DNA damage checkpoint, the G1-governing pathway of D-type cyclins, their partner cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdk), Cdk inhibitors, and the retinoblastoma protein constitute a functional unit and prominent oncogenic target.
