The influence of chronic platinum electrode implantation upon the myoelectric activity and histology of the stomach, small intestine and gall-bladder in sheep.

The influence of bipolar Teflon-platinum electrode implantation onto the antral, small intestinal and gall-bladder muscular tunic on the myoelectric activity was studied in 5 adult rams for the period up to 3 months. Histological examinations of the muscular tissue surrounding the electrodes were also performed. The electromyographical recordings were done 4 times at the 3-4 week intervals. No marked differences in the character and the amplitude of the consecutive recordings were detected. The histological image of the muscular tissue was normal. Thus, the use of these electrodes guarantees the correctness of the electromyographical recordings obtained even from the gastrointestinal segments possessing very thin muscular layer.
