Today hairy leukoplakia has come to represent a sign of immunosuppression and not just of HIV infection. Although molecular mechanisms have not been fully elucidated, Epstein-Barr virus appears to play a significant role in its etiopathogenesis. We present four cases that illustrate that HL may be seen in non-HIV and nonimmunocompromised patients.
