Kennedy v Braidwood and weight management preventive services: A renewed opportunity for improved health.

Kennedy v Braidwood is a recent legal challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) preventive services coverage provision that requires specific preventive services to be provided without patient cost sharing. The Supreme Court of the United States fortunately upheld the constitutionality of the ACA preventive services coverage. This case has important implications across a range of services recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), including those addressing weight management. The USPSTF recommends several effective behavioral counseling interventions to prevent or address excess weight. The populations affected include pregnant women, children and adolescents, and adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors. Protection of the ACA preventive services coverage provision provides a renewed opportunity to improve critical preventive health services that significantly improve the health of millions of Americans.
