Aesthetic and Psychosocial Impacts of Hyaluronic Acid Fillers in Patients with Retrognathic Profiles.

Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid (HA) in redefining the lower third of the face in orthodontically treated individuals with well-defined skeletal bases, focusing on its influence on facial aesthetics, self-esteem, and quality of life.

Method: Twenty-four individuals aged 19-43 years with retruded chins participated in the study. Data collection included socioeconomic questionnaires and validated instruments such as the OHIP-14, Face-Q™, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the Brazil-validated Orthognathic Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (B-OQLQ). Changes in perceived attractiveness were assessed through standardized pre- and post-treatment photographs. HA fillers, with rheological properties of high cohesiveness and elasticity, were applied to specific facial points based on the Medical Codes (MD Codes™) protocol. These points were strategically selected to project the chin, define the jawline, and improve the contours of the lower third of the face, using standardized techniques to achieve aesthetic harmony.

Results: A statistically significant improvement in satisfaction with the chin and jawline (p < 0.000755) was observed, accompanied by a substantial increase in perceived attractiveness after the treatment. A notable migration to lower B-OQLQ scores (< 10) indicated improvements in self-image and quality of life. Observers, including orthodontists, facial harmonizers, and laypeople, consistently rated post-treatment images as more aesthetically pleasing.

Conclusion: HA fillers demonstrated high efficacy in improving facial aesthetics, self-esteem, and quality of life in retrognathic patients post-orthodontic treatment. These findings support the use of HA as a minimally invasive alternative for facial enhancement.

期刊介绍: Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is a publication of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the official journal of the European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (EASAPS), Società Italiana di Chirurgia Plastica Ricostruttiva ed Estetica (SICPRE), Vereinigung der Deutschen Aesthetisch Plastischen Chirurgen (VDAPC), the Romanian Aesthetic Surgery Society (RASS), Asociación Española de Cirugía Estética Plástica (AECEP), La Sociedad Argentina de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reparadora (SACPER), the Rhinoplasty Society of Europe (RSE), the Iranian Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgeons (ISPAS), the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons (SAPS), the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS), the Egyptian Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ESPRS), and the Sociedad Chilena de Cirugía Plástica, Reconstructiva y Estética (SCCP). Aesthetic Plastic Surgery provides a forum for original articles advancing the art of aesthetic plastic surgery. Many describe surgical craftsmanship; others deal with complications in surgical procedures and methods by which to treat or avoid them. Coverage includes "second thoughts" on established techniques, which might be abandoned, modified, or improved. Also included are case histories; improvements in surgical instruments, pharmaceuticals, and operating room equipment; and discussions of problems such as the role of psychosocial factors in the doctor-patient and the patient-public interrelationships. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is covered in Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, SciSearch, Research Alert, Index Medicus-Medline, and Excerpta Medica/Embase.
