Letter to the Editor: Oncologic significance of the lateral margin in buccal cancer
The current study on the oncologic importance of the lateral margin in buccal cancer makes an important contribution to oral oncology. The present research, particularly examined 216 individuals, stresses the prognostic importance of the lateral margin, identifying it as a crucial but hitherto overlooked driver of recurrence and survival in buccal cancer. This study’s key findings focused on the oncologic risk connected with skin-sparing surgery. This cohort analysis of buccal cancer reveals that LM is most common in ≤ 1 mm size. LM ≤ 1 mm predicts worse LRFS and DFS, regardless of other margins or risk factors. Skin preservation leads to a higher rate of LM ≤ 1 mm, hence surgeons should decrease the criterion to include more tissue laterally, including skin if needed.
