Employing longitudinal patent data from China's energy-saving sector, we empirically demonstrate the nonlinear relationship between community dynamic and overall innovation outputs. Internal knowledge search moderates this nonlinear effect, whereas external cross-community search fails to produce multiplicative innovation gains.
