Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), metabolites produced by the intestinal microbiota, are integral to the bidirectional regulatory pathway linking the gut and the brain. SCFAs may significantly influence the risk, prognosis, recurrence, and management of complications associated with AIS. Potential mechanisms underlying these effects include the facilitation of brain-gut barrier repair, the mitigation of oxidative stress, the reduction of neuroinflammatory responses, and the inhibition of autophagy and apoptosis.
