Investigating the effects of the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs on their entrepreneurial capabilities and developing effective entrepreneurship strategies
This research aims to examine how challenges faced by women entrepreneurs affect their entrepreneurial abilities, as measured by the entrepreneurial capability scale, and to develop effective entrepreneurship strategies. A total of 420 women from diverse regions in Turkey participated in assessing their entrepreneurship capabilities using a comprehensive 36-item scale covering four distinct dimensions. To evaluate challenges encountered by women entrepreneurs, a 26-item scale was employed, encompassing three distinct dimensions. Among these challenges, the perception of gender discrimination and societal pressure emerges as a critical issue, as women experiencing higher levels of discrimination and societal expectations tend to face more obstacles in their entrepreneurial journey. Sector-specific challenges present a significant barrier, with women encountering industry-related difficulties reporting a higher number of business problems. Women grappling with substantial challenges within their businesses demonstrate an increased perception of both gender discrimination and sector-specific challenges. The findings underscore the importance of future-focused initiatives, strategies for managing challenges, reducing gender discrimination, fostering a mindset oriented toward risk and success, and recognizing internal obstacles to enhance women’s entrepreneurial capabilities. Targeted support programs aimed at addressing biases, nurturing a forward-thinking mindset, building resilience, promoting risk-taking, and overcoming internal barriers are recommended. Moreover, the study offers insights into coping mechanisms for challenges and perceptions of business problems. Optimal strategies in education and technical support are identified, showing significant potential for empowering women entrepreneurs. These findings contribute to the understanding of women entrepreneurship in Turkey and offer practical recommendations for stakeholders.
