The predicted excess enthalpy (HE) and logarithmic activity coefficients ln(γ) using the COSMO-RS model were validated with the experimentally obtained VFA recovery from fermentation broth. To understand the extraction mechanism of VFAs, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) were performed. The results suggest that long chain fatty acids exhibit strong Van der Waals interaction with DBP anion leading to higher VFA extraction. The enzymatic esterification of VFAs with ethanol in [P666,14][DBP] was optimized using the Box-Behnken response surface design of experiment.
