Emerson, Thoreau, Walt Whitman and Robert Frost in American literature expressed their acquaintance with the Gita, the Upanishads and Oriental philosophy. These Transcendental writers interested in the concept of selfhood found in Hindu scriptures a well elaborated doctrine of self.
