Yet only a small percentage of persons seeking treatment are receiving care. Many resources are now available to help nurse practitioners use a harm reduction approach to helping people understand their options and make choices. Harm reduction includes offering U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for treatment of tobacco use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and opioid use disorder. Drug mechanisms for acute and maintenance treatment are discussed. [Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, 62(7), 7-10.].
