During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the incidence of pediatric T2D increased. This was more notable among males and Black people. Increased rates of T2D may be due to rising obesity rates observed during the pandemic, behavioral and nutritional changes due to the lockdown, and decreased structure typically provided by in-person schooling. New-onset T2D presentations are more severe than in years prior to the pandemic, with higher initial hemoglobin A1C levels and increased rates of diabetic ketoacidosis. Increased severity in presentation may be due to hesitation in seeking care, increased virtual care, and limited access to health care resources. The pathophysiology of the relationship between T2D and COVID-19 in youth is not clear at this time.
