Selected examples of nitrated proteins (<em>i.e.,</em> 3-nitrotyrosine) are surveyed to underscore the role of this post-translational modification on cell homeostasis. While accumulated evidence shows that large amounts of peroxynitrite participates of broad oxidation and nitration events in invading pathogens and host tissues, a closer look supports that low to moderate levels selectively trigger signal transduction cascades.
