Les objectifs de cette étude étaient : (1) d’étudier l’évolution de l’empathie chez les étudiants en kinésithérapie en fonction du niveau académique, de l’âge et du sexe ; (2) d’analyser l’évolution de l’empathie en tenant compte des facteurs pertinents qui entrent en jeu; (3) d’évaluer si l’empathie doit être renforcée dans le programme d’études en théorie et en pratique;
5.
The objectives of this study were: (1) to study the evolution of empathy among physiotherapy students in our institution according to academic level, age and gender; (2) to analyze the evolution of empathy while accounting for relevant factors that come into play;(3) to assess whether empathy needs to be reinforced in the program's curriculum in theory and in practice.
A survey was conducted with 125 students enrolled in the Diploma of Physiotherapy at the University St-Joseph of Beyrouth and having completed at least one semester. Empathy levels were measured using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy – Health Professional Students version (JSE-HPS).
A high overall empathy score was noted among students. No significant correlation was observed between age and JSE-HPS questionnaire scores. The overall empathy score was not significantly correlated with the academic year of physiotherapy students. JSE-HPS scores were not significantly different between pre-internship and internship students. The total empathy score for women were significantly higher than that of men. The JSE-HPS score was significantly high among participants who consider that reading non-medical literature is pleasurable, whereas it was significantly low among those who consider that it is not pleasurable.
It would therefore be interesting to incorporate specific interventions to further improve the level of empathy among students enrolled in the Diploma of Physiotherapy.
