Repatriation of babies between neonatal units: A parent survey

Introduction

Repatriation of babies between neonatal units ensures infants are receiving optimal care for their needs. A new environment, however, can be stressful for parents. This study aimed to explore parents experience of preparing for their infant's repatriation to their local neonatal unit and causes of delays in being transferred.

Method

A survey was developed to explore parents’ experiences of preparation for neonatal repatriation. A retrospective audit was conducted to explore reasons for transfer delays.

Results

There were 31 reported delays to infant repatriation over an 8-month period. Twenty parent surveys were completed. Frequency analysis of responses identified areas for improvement including transfer communication, information about local neonatal unit, inclusion in decision making, repatriation logistics and communicating repatriation as a positive step.

Conclusion

Improved communication regarding the transfer process, and greater information about the local unit and the transfer itself would lessen the challenges faced by parents during this process.
