[Frequency of post-operative complications during periodontal therapy].
This study examines the incidence and severity of postoperative complications during the surgical phase of periodontal treatment. The postoperative pain, swelling and bleeding were evaluated in 500 periodontal surgeries. Frenectomies, fenestration procedures and root amputation procedures were not included. When all the steps of periodontal treatment were followed and the patient was performing adequate plaque control, the postoperative complications were minimal. We were interested not in the pharmaceutical preparation of the patient but in the psychological one. Antibiotics were used only in cases that a medical problem required their administration. The bleeding incidences were due to mechanical trauma of the surgical area. Our results are almost identical with the results of similar studies. The overall result indicates that the risks of postoperative complications and pain after periodontal surgery are minimal.
