Patrimonio industrial y desarrollo turístico local. El caso del antiguo Central Azucarero Hershey, Santa Cruz del Norte, Mayabeque, Cuba

El turismo puede y debe convertirse  en un mecanismo de estimulación para el desarrollo local y mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de los diferentes actores sociales a nivel territorial de pueblos y municipios principalmente. El presente trabajo  va encaminado  a demostrar como un sitio que tuvo un pujante crecimiento económico-social durante  el siglo XX y que en la actualidad se ha convertido en un pueblo casi fantasma, caído en el olvido, puede la práctica de las actividades turístico-recreativas rescatarlo para beneficio de la comunidad local. El objetivo fue realizar un diagnóstico y evaluación del Complejo Hershey para su uso turístico-recreativo, conformado por: el poblado histórico, de singulares  valores arquitectónicos; el tren eléctrico, único que se conserva y funciona en Cuba; las instalaciones industriales, de gran valor patrimonial hoy abandonadas; y el parque natural o jardines de Hershey diseñado como lugar de recreo y esparcimiento  de los funcionarios y trabajadores del antiguo central. Los principales métodos y técnicas utilizadas fueron: Análisis histórico-lógico, análisis y síntesis, observación participante, entrevistas individuales. El resultado fue el diseño y planificación del nuevo producto turístico-recreativo, Complejo Hershey, destacando sus potencialidades de  comercialización tanto para el mercado nacional como el extranjero.   Abstract Tourism can and must become a mechanism for stimulating local development and improving the quality of life of different stakeholders at local level, mainly in towns and villages. The present work is aimed at demonstrating how a site that had a thriving economic and social growth in the twentieth century but today has become almost a forgotten ghost town, can be rescued through the practice of tourism and recreational activities for the benefit of the local community. The goal was to make a diagnosis and evaluation of Hershey complex for recreational tourism use, consisting of: the historical village with its unique architectural values; the only conserved and operating electric train in Cuba; abandoned industrial facilities, of high cultural value; and the natural park or Hershey Gardens originally designed as a recreation and entertainment area for officials and staff of the old sugar plant. The main methods and techniques used were: Historical-logical analysis, analysis and synthesis, participant observation and individual interviews. The result was the design and planning of a new tourist-recreational product, the Hershey Recreation Complex, and its potential for marketing both domestically and abroad.
