Chapter 11

This chapter identifies and examines various underlying ideological frameworks that appear to provide a conceptual logic for integrating the five principles of reconciliation within different conceptualizations of reconciliation. These ideological frames are idealtype conceptual constructions which provide systems of meaning for ideas around reconciliation. The underlying logic of how the various principles of reconciliation are linked to the creation or re-establishment of social order is explained by these ideological frameworks. The principle of national (top-down) versus local (bottom-up) approaches to reconciliation is then discussed with reference to these hypothesized ideological frameworks. Each framework provides a different understanding of why a top-down or bottom-up approach should be supported. The level to which different stakeholders subscribe to the various ideological frames is examined to see what light it sheds on patterns of conflict and agreement. 2.
