Typical failure modes in a loop power hub installed in the outside plant are listed with discussions on the criticality of each to the network. Various methods of transporting the alarm information from the power hub to the optical network unit (ONU) are discussed, with detailed analyses on the technical merits and demerits and the cost impact of each method. DC schemes using DC voltages or currents as well as AC schemes using data channels or audio tones are discussed.
