The European Commission research and technology development (RTD) strategy considered the following areas for solutions to the problem of reducing environmental pollution from transport: improve economic cost effectiveness; bring about performance improvement; increase safety and reliability; enhance supply security, particularly for energy; and improve the environmental characteristics of the sector.
