The preliminary application of WebGIS in assessing environmental impact on human health
Environmental impact assessment is usually a necessary procedure to evaluate the impacts of a project on its surrounding media before the construction started. However, assessment of the final environmental impact on human health is usually lacked during the evaluation process in China. This paper demonstrated a web based GIS system that consists of twofold, which can aid health assessment: 1) a database of heavy metal project information was constructed based on ArcGIS Server and MS ACCESS; 2) taking the lead pollution risk on children for an example, we incorporated the Integration Exposure Uptake Biokinetic Model (IEUBK) which was approved by US EPA into a network version, and then to determine the parameters for dietary intake, inhalation and skin contact in different regions in China. The preliminary application of GIS in environmental health impact assessment tentatively lays the foundation for predicting health risks of heavy metal pollution from projects before construction.
