Strukturwandel als transformative Wende

Abstract Ambitions are currently being formulated in the Rhenish lignite mining region on very different scales and translated into comparatively abstract models or, vice versa, into specific technocratic images. However, transformation is being negotiated, implemented and experienced locally with a wide range of actors and people. The coveted resource here is land. And the innovations that can develop regional appeal as good practice are also created locally. The upcoming transformation process for the largely abandoned village of Morschenich-Alt, which is located in the southern foreland of the Hambach open-cast mine and which will no longer be used for mining due to the international climate protests about Hambach Forest, is to be discussed in this context. This article is a status-quo report on the local process and a call to action and practical design of the great transformation toward sustainability.
