Wireless access in HFC (hybrid-fiber-coax) systems essentially integrates two major telecommunication infrastructure, i.e., wireless and HFC networks. From a transmission system technology point of view, this paper reviews the feasibility and technical limitations in carrying out the network integration. Capacity estimation of an HFC optical node-based CDMA and TDMA microcellular/PCS systems using an upstream channel model is provided. The channel model consists of an empirical wave propagation model for transmission from handset to the radio antenna port (RAP), a coaxial cable model that takes into account ingress noise and microreflections, and a clipping-limited laser diode.
