A power factor that is close to one is a good indicator for the overall power quality, especially for an electrical power system with high uptake of commercial loads with a large amount of inductance. A poor power factor normally leads to a less efficient electrical system, and may also be less economically efficient for system operators and end consumers. Therefore, power factor improvement plays a crucial role in the efficient system operation and electricity consumption costs reductions. This paper provides a detailed implementation of the technical and economic value of power factor improvement, and it is verified through an analysis of a real-world electrical system and loads.
