Demand-side integration for customer choice through variable service subscription
Variable Service Subscription is a “Regional Codes and Standards” type method for integrating demand-side resources into power system and market operations. This method has been initially identified in prior work by the authors. This paper details the method in comparison to other demand-side implementation methods and identifies program examples as well as information exchange requirements. The paper discusses smart grid infrastructure as a support for widespread demand-side integration through Variable Service Subscription. By coordinating the automation of electric service according to both subscribed customer preferences and system operational needs, unprecedented levels of customer choice can be enabled in a fashion that benefits both the grid and end-use customers.
