Computerized coding of the medical problem statement

This paper presents computer techniques for coding medical problem statements. Some relevant principles of morphology, semantics, and syntax are discussed. Two coders, called KODIAC and Baylor, are described in terms of their algorithms, computer tables, and accuracy. The author concludes that, due to the narrow range of medical problem statements which regularly appear in medical practice, a modified table look-up procedure can successfully code medical problem statements.
