ASİMETRİK STRATEJİLERİN DÖNÜŞÜMÜNDE MEDYA KULLANIMI: ORTAK MANTIK, FARKLI YÖNTEMLER
The process involving the shift of armed conflicts towards non-conventional strategies has transformed both of method of using force, and ways of achieving political goals. It has been observed that subjects and areas, previously not relevant to wars, begins to have a function. The role of the media in achieving policy objectives, has gradually increased, and it transformed the non-conventional uses of media. In this study, the interaction between media and wars was examined and the function of the media within asymmetric strategies was questioned. With the emergence of the media's new functions, guerrilla organizations began to focus on activities to increase visibility in the media and to announce their propaganda. This was followed by the ‘banalization of war’ and these efforts began to fail to make as much impact as they used to. The response to this came from terrorist organizations. They managed to put their activities back on the media agenda with most brutal violent methods. In parallel, widespread social media and computer games have added a new dimension to today's conflicts. The study examines all this transformation process and reveals the similarities and differences of different strategies in media use.
