A description of natural, climatic, ecological, socioeconomic peculiarities of the Altai Republic and their influence on formation of the academic environment of the region is given in the article. The particular features of the Altai Republic (multi-national population and low population density, predominance of agricultural produce sector, adverse weather and climate conditions, growing ecological problems, wide variety of ethnic and religious traditions and customs, etc.) make a considerable impact on formation of the republic’s social base.
