The eyelid is less in size in the vertical dimension as compared with the horizontal dimension. It may be isolated or associated with other ocular anomalies (e.g. strabismus or telecanthus) or systemic anomalies (blepharo-cheilo-odontic syndrome)There can be associated lateral canthal misalignment and as a consequence lateral ectropion. The condition was first described by Desmarres in 1854.
