National practical assessments have been part of the radiation therapy training in New Zealand for at least 15 years. With the development and implementation of the Bachelor of Health Science (Radiation Therapy) the national Competency Based Assessment (CBA) has evolved. Alongside this the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB) has introduced CBAs for both therapy and diagnostic medical radiation technologists as a means of measuring the outcomes of the relatively new degree programs. In the five years of the CBA development, the aim has been to have a therapy CBA that meets both the academic needs of the training provider (Central Institute of Technology) and the registration requirements of the MRTB. This paper outlines the guidelines and content for the national CBA for radiation therapists in New Zealand. (author abstract)
