Mitochondrial dysfunction leading to oxidative stress and other environmental factors, diet and lifestyle are the major risk factors. Mitochondria play an essential role and are a potential therapeutic target for treating and preventing AD progression. Various biochemical molecules involved in mitochondrial metabolic pathways are tested as directly acting on mitochondria. Numerous antioxidants are considered as a potential treatment for AD.
