This paper gives examples of existing and emerging applications for remote line powering and describes the development and consolidation of standards that support it. The RFT-V standard, predominantly a North American standard, is now being considered in locations throughout the world because of its inherent power transmission advantages when compared to the well-established RFT-C standard. This paper describes the content of the newly released ATIS standard and discusses the potential for the upcoming IEC 62368-3 standard. The paper concludes that RFT-V power architecture is safe, and that the inherent power transmission advantages will drive RFT-V to power the next generation of distributed telecommunication equipment.
