Investigating the Effect of Non-Linear Loads on Sizing of Voltage Source in Microgrid with Distributed Energy Resources
Dynamic nature of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) pose many problems in microgrid unlike the conventional energy resources with distributed energy resources (DERs). Therefore, battery energy storage system (BESS) has gained popularity due to its better efficiency and high energy density. Generally, BESS cannot operate without any local voltage source (VS). Moreover, non-linear loads cause many issues such as harmonic current and current unbalance when connected to the power system. Supply output voltage and current is also distorted due to the interaction of harmonic currents with the VS impedance. This paper presents the power flow to the loads under grid-connected mode and islanded-mode considering both linear and non-linear loads. In this paper, the analytical methodology to investigate the feasible rating of VS is also discussed for safe operation of microgrid using MATLAB/Simulink. Further, suitable rating of VS improves power quality (PQ) of the power system as it can withstand harmonics effects caused by RES and non-linear loads.
