The ability to combine a variety of datasets in a variety of ways makes any GIS a useful tool for almost any field of knowledge. From routinely performing work-related tasks to scientifically exploring the complexity of our world, GIS offers people the geographic advantage of becoming more productive, more aware, and more receptive to the planet Earth. A GIS can be defined as a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, and visualize geographically referenced data. Thematic maps are the result of spatial analysis sets made in GIS programs. Spatial analysis includes the techniques by which the relationships between entities are studied, from a topological, geometric or geographical point of view.
