Maximising spectral efficiency in 3G with hybrid ad-hoc UTRA TDD/UTRA FDD cellular mobile communications
A novel strategy is presented to maximise spectral efficiency in 3rd generation (3G) wireless communications. This strategy involves, first, permitting peer-to-peer UTRA TDD communication, in the under-utilised UTRA FDD uplink, at the edges of UTRA FDD cells. Consequently, a novel medium-access-control protocol, denoted as channel-sensing TDMA TDD, is employed to efficiently co-ordinate the peer-to-peer UTRA TDD communication. Channel-sensing TDMA TDD employs a modified busy-tone broadcast/channel-sensing mechanism to avoid and mitigate high interference scenarios. Results show significant improvements in system capacity and spectral-efficiency from the application of this novel approach in 3G.
