Visualization of CTU Partitioning And Time Complexity Analysis in HEVC and VVC
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the current standard in video coding having high coding efficiency than its predecessor (HEVC). However, as a trade-off, its complexity is increased both on the encoding and decoding side over HEVC because of checking various combinations. In VVC, coding efficiency is gained up to 50% over HEVC which is possible due to flexible block partitioning. VVC improves its efficiency using Multi Type Tree partitioning (MTT), incorporating 67 intra prediction modes and using Multiple Transform Selection (MTS). The inclusion of flexible partitioning is the main source for increased time complexity. In this paper, time complexity of HEVC and VVC codec is investigated. Also, the visualization of CTU partitioning is analyzed. Experimental results show that 90.19% time complexity is increased on average in VVC compared to HEVC with the same configuration file. On the other hand, on average 29.72% bit-rate is saved in VVC over HEVC standard.
