Analysis of Electrical Loss in Single Phase Induction Motors
A renewed energy saving awareness derived by the recent rising of oil prices and global warming crises reinforced the loss minimization practices of electric motors including single phase induction motors (SPIMs). An essential requirement for this is the modeling of machines electrical loss consisting of iron loss and copper loss. In this paper, after considering different alternatives for a steady state model of the machines, the electrical loss, is modeled into an equivalent circuit of SPIMs. A special emphasis is placed on the modeling of iron loss. Then, several machine characteristics related to the machine loss are investigated without and with iron loss at different operating points. The influences of supply frequency on the loss are also considered. A computerized setup is developed to investigate the machine loss experimentally. The simulation results in comparison with the experimental ones provide further insight into the nature of loss components in the machine and lay down a basis for further work on the loss minimization operation and control of these motors.
