The objective of this study is to explore the factors that influence decision-making about hospitalizations of nursing home residents in the Czech Republic that become terminal. A total of 27 semi-structured interviews with nurses and social workers registered with nursing homes, as well as general practitioners cooperating with nursing homes, were conducted. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Six themes of the factors influencing decision-making about hospitalizations were made: the options of the nursing home, the accessibility of medical decision-making, inadequate care planning, the age of the resident, fear of legal action, and making the decision to hospitalize. Terminality of life seems to have no impact on the decision of nurses about hospitalization.
