In most cases, however, they receive time-varying levels of quality of service. This paper describes a technique to deliver nearly constant perceptual quality of service when transmitting video sequences over differentiated services IP networks. MPEG video packets are transmitted either as low-loss premium packets or as regular best-effort packets depending on their individual perceptual importance. On a frame-by-frame basis, allocation to the premium class is performed depending on the perceptual importance of each macroblock, the desired level of quality of service and the instantaneous network state. The resulting perceptually-based, time-varying use of premium and best-effort network resources delivers nearly constant quality of service to end users and it yields significant higher PSNR values compared to constant allocation of premium bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":90694,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Although the near VoD service is scalable, it can provide only dozens of videos. A scalable video delivery paradigm, named scheduled video delivery (SVD), is described. In the SVD paradigm, users submit requests with specification of start time. The SVD system combines requests to form multicasting groups and schedules these groups to meet the deadline. SVD is not only scaled to the number of users but also to the number of video objects. We believe that a fundamental challenge for interactive environments is developing models and methods for \"context awareness\". We present an ontology for context awareness for interactive environments. We show how the elements of this ontology correspond to the elements of a software architecture for observing situation and context. Within this framework, context predicts the evolution of the situation, and provides \"meaning\" for objects and events. In previous works, the product code was optimized by searching for the best RS protection for each RCPC code rate. We present a local search algorithm that jointly optimizes the RS and the RCPC codes. The knowledge of a user's emotion permits adaptive strategies striving for a more natural and robust interaction. We classify seven emotional states: surprise, joy, anger, fear, disgust, sadness, and neutral user state. The user's emotion is extracted by a parallel stochastic analysis of his spoken and haptical machine interactions while understanding the desired intention. The introduced methods are based on the common prosodic speech features pitch and energy, but rely also on the semantic and intention based features wording, degree of verbosity, temporal intention and word rate, and finally the history of user utterances. As further modality even touch-screen or mouse interaction is analyzed. The estimates based on these features are integrated in a multimodal way. The introduced methods are based on results of user studies. A realization proved to be reliable compared with subjective probands' impressions.","PeriodicalId":90694,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Proximity sensing extends the concept of computer-human interaction beyond actual physical contact with a device. In this paper, a virtual keyboard implementation is presented and keystroke recognition experiments with the keyboard utilizing proximity measurements are described. An infrared (IR) transceiver array is used for detecting the proximity of a finger. Keystroke recognition accuracy is examined with k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classifier while a multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier is designed for online implementation. Experiments and results of keystroke classification are presented for both classifiers. The recognition accuracy, which is between 78% and 99% for k-NN classifier and between 69% and 96% for MLP classifier, depends mainly on the location of a specific key on the keyboard area.","PeriodicalId":90694,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In this scheme, each client temporarily stores the ongoing media stream in the client buffer and forwards it to another client with adequate buffering delay to meet the next client playback time. Therefore, the clients request the same video program can be chained together if the client buffer is large enough to bridge clients' playback time. However, existing chaining schemes do not efficiently exploit the client buffer space. In this paper, we present an optimal chaining algorithm to fully utilize the client buffer space and hence minimize the required server streams. Our performance comparison demonstrates that the optimal chaining scheme significantly reduces the server load over the existing chaining schemes. More importantly, the proposed scheme can integrate the streaming proxy into the video chain, which makes the video chain more reliable and flexible in real systems. This paper also presents the prototype implementation of the optimal chaining based video-on-demand system.","PeriodicalId":90694,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
