The most satisfactory approach suggested is based on a multiple state working life table. Numerical examples of the measurement of work time lost are provided for particular application to the actuarial assessment of damages (arising out of personal injury or fatal accident). Other applications, including the pricing of unemployment insurance, are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":81715,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Actuaries","volume":"493 1","pages":"533-595"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/S0020268100043237","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56708310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It describes and compares the main models that have been proposed and thereby provides some guidance on how such models might be constructed and utilised. There is also discussion of the importance of constructing such mathematical models of transmission of infection which further our understanding of the transmission dynamics of the epidemic and help to identify important epidemiological parameters and their likely influence on the epidemic's course.","PeriodicalId":81715,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Actuaries","volume":"117 1","pages":"319-405"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/S0020268100043122","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56708173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The company is modelled alongside the market in aggregate so that the impact of changes in premium rates relative to the market can be assessed. An extensive computer model is developed along these lines, intended for use in practical applications by actuaries advising the management of genera1 insurance companies. Simulation methods are used to explore the consequences of uncertainty, particularly in regard to inflation and investments. Some comments are made on the role of actuaries in general insurance. Alternative approaches to describing the behaviour of an insurance firm in the market are considered.","PeriodicalId":81715,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Actuaries","volume":"117 1","pages":"173-277"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/S0020268100043109","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"56708086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The marketing problem, to which this was the chosen solution, is discussed and a number of possible future developments are then considered. The second half of the paper is devoted to discussion of the question of matching assets and liabilities for the range of products developed.
