To evaluate its importance in elderly women, this study examined differences in quality of life and self-esteem among those who did or did not undergo CS. Methods: This casecontrol study included 25 elderly women who underwent CS and a control group of 25 elderly women who did not undergo CS; the groups were matched by socioeconomic data. Assessment methods included the Mini-Mental State Examination, a quality of life (QOL) questionnaire (World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a questionnaire developed for the study of sociodemographic data, motivation, and satisfaction with CS. Results: The mean age was 67.26 years, with a mean of 9.96 years of education. The most common surgeries were abdominoplasty and blepharoplasty. The most common motivations were physical discomfort, desire to improve QOL, and dissatisfaction with self-image. No subjects were found to have low self-esteem and the level of satisfaction with personal or social life was high. There was no difference in QOL or self-esteem between the 2 groups. Conclusion: Physical and psychological motivations cause the elderly to undergo CS. There was no difference in QOL or self-esteem among elderly women who did or did not have CS. Elderly women who underwent CS showed high levels of satisfaction with their personal and social life.","PeriodicalId":79099,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de cirurgia","volume":"29 1","pages":"528-535"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71173522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two-dimensional photography has limitations in capturing structure depth and volume, requiring other instruments to evaluate these changes. Several technologies have been developed for three-dimensional analysis of objects, of which stereophotogrammetry uses computerized analysis of two or more simultaneous photographs of the object to produce a three-dimensional geometric model. The advantages of stereophotogrammetry include lower cost, portability, absence of radiation, and speed of image capture. The aim of the present study was to perform a bibliographic review evaluating the use and accuracy of stereophotogrammetry for measuring the volume of facial structures. Methods: Using a combination of MeSH keywords and free terms, a search was performed in the Cochrane Library and MEDLINE databases. The search included all articles published on or before May 2018. Results: 2,213 studies were initially retrieved using this search strategy. Of these, 27 studies were selected based on the eligibility criteria, of which 21 were non-randomized case studies and 6 were randomized clinical trials. The methodological quality of the studies varied between 50 and 67%, on a grading scale from 0 to 100%. Conclusions: Stereophotogrammetry is a promising technology that is increasingly being used to check for facial volume variations with high accuracy and reproducibility. More studies with higher methodological quality are needed for evaluating the accuracy and use of stereophotogrammetry for facial volume evaluations.","PeriodicalId":79099,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de cirurgia","volume":"33 1","pages":"572-579"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71173657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They result from rapid stretching of the skin and often observed in adolescents, pregnant women, obese individuals, and people experiencing rapid change in weight. They initially appear as erythematous and edematous plaques (red striae), and as they mature, they become whitish and atrophic (striae alba) due to the degradation and reorganization of elastin and collagen fibers. Currently, laser treatment is an emerging noninvasive therapeutic modality that is successful in reducing the excessive vascularization of red striae and in stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in the alba. In the present literature review, PubMed was searched for articles on the treatment of atrophic striations with laser that were published from January 2000 to December 2016. The authors have found 28 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Only few randomized clinical trials have evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of energybased treatments. Based on clinical cases and systematic reviews, both ablative and non-ablative fractional lasers caused moderate improvement in the appearance of distending striae. The 1540-nm non-ablative fractional laser is more likely to be considered the first-line treatment for stretch marks. However, future studies should focus on research with longer duration, studies with objective and standardized measures for the evaluation of results, such as biopsy results, and molecular studies showing an increase in elastic and collagen fibers that correlate to the improvement in the clinical appearance of the striae after using lasers with systematized parameters. ■ ABSTRACT","PeriodicalId":79099,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de cirurgia","volume":"33 1","pages":"580-585"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71173671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are, to date, no well-defined protocols for VTE prophylaxis in plastic surgery. The objective of this paper is to present a protocol for the prophylaxis of VTE used in the Plastic Surgery Service of the Hospital e Maternidade Celso Pierro (HMCP) Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) de Campinas in São Paulo (SP), while also showing the incidence of VTE in patients undergoing abdominoplasties before and after initiation of the protocol, as well as the incidence of hematomas after the total period of 6 years. Methods: For the creation of this protocol, medical records of patients who underwent abdominoplasty from January 2010 to December 2015 were revised, identifying cases of VTE in this period, associated or not with the use of pharmacological prophylaxis, and those of hematoma after initiation of the protocol. Results: The protocol for prophylaxis of VTE that has been used in the service since 2014 is based on the Anger Protocol and includes non-pharmacological measures and pharmacological measures. Two hundred and forty-three medical records were analyzed in this study. After initiation of the protocol, no cases of VTE were observed in the 74 patients who underwent abdominoplasty, and only one case of hematoma was observed. Before the protocol was initiated, VTE developed in 2 cases among 169 operated patients. Conclusion: After adopting the VTE prophylaxis protocol, we achieved an incidence of 0% VTE in the abdominoplasties in this period, compared to an incidence of 1.18% before the protocol. The incidence of bruising after surgery was 1.35%, which is comparable to rates in the literature for surgery without the use of pharmacological prophylaxis. ■ ABSTRACT","PeriodicalId":79099,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de cirurgia","volume":"33 1","pages":"33-38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71171265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most relevant studies originally published in any language in the last 7 years and indexed in the US National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Latin American and Caribbean Literature Health Sciences (LILACS) databases were evaluated. A literature survey was performed using keywords related to the theme and inclusion and exclusion criteria. The final sample comprised 25 publications, one domestic and 24 international. The results showed a gap in the literature with respect to studies that evaluated different split-thickness skin graft donor site dressings. The literature review revealed the impossibility of establishing the most effective split-thickness skin graft donor site dressing due to the lack of scientific evidence, thus preventing the formulation of a definite conclusion on this topic. ■ ABSTRACT","PeriodicalId":79099,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de cirurgia","volume":"33 1","pages":"119-129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71171764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flaps are complex options for closing large areas. The perineal region may be affected by extensive lesions that require the use of flaps for repair. Case Report: A 56-year-old female patient with anal adenocarcinoma underwent abdominoperineal amputation surgery of the rectum with postoperative radiotherapy for 2 years. She had cutaneous recurrence of the neoplastic lesion with indication of surgical margin expansion to control the local recurrence. After extensive resection with safety margins of the skin defect, we selected double V-Y flap of length 15 cm each and a total thickness of the gluteal subcutaneous tissue (ST) to fill up the dead space caused by resection and advancement of the defect. Intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis and deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis were administered. The patient progressed well from the procedure, with no problems. Discussion: A flap is a tissue that is mobilized based on vascular anatomy. Flaps based on the subdermal plexus include bipedicle, advancement (V-Y), rotation, and transposition flaps. Perineum reconstructions are often indicated for tumors, trauma, infections, burns, or pressure sores. The anal region is divided into the anal canal and the anal margin. Among the histological types of anal cancer, the most prevalent are squamous cell carcinoma (most common histology), adenocarcinoma, melanoma, small cell carcinoma, and sarcomas. The risk of regional recurrence after treatment can reach approximately 30% of cases and is the most frequent recurrence pattern. ■ ABSTRACT","PeriodicalId":79099,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de cirurgia","volume":"33 1","pages":"135-138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71171799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
